Commercial Painters Hayward Using Low-VOC Paints

Commercial Painters Hayward Using Low-VOC Paints

An increasing number of commercial painters in Hayward are using paints that will not create health hazards to other people as well as damage to the environment. Low-VOC paints, for example, have become popular in large part due to the growing health and environmental concerns of traditional paint with higher VOCs.

If you think that low-VOC paints are only for residential structures, think again. Commercial establishments, offices, and facilities now also use non-VOC paints to refresh or update their appearance. Why low-VOC paints?

VOC stands for “volatile organic compound.” While VOCs exists from natural sources, most of the VOC’s we know come from traditional paint products. Traditional primers, solvents, binders, and strippers also contain VOC.

What happens when you use paints with VOC? As the paint dries, the VOCs evaporate, emitting that familiar “paint odor” that you smell while you’re inhaling. Prolonged exposure to VOCs can result in a variety of health problems such as irritation to the eyes and nose, headaches, migraines, even asthma, and lung cancer.

Many facilities and institutions – schools, hospitals, clinics, laboratories and other medical facilities in particular – prefer or even strictly specify that their offices be painted with low-VOC paints. Other businesses such as hotels, restaurants, processing plants, and factories as well as schools are also using low-VOC paints. So, what makes a paint “low-VOC”?

According to the latest regulations, a paint is considered “low-VOC” when it has 250 grams per liter (g/L) of VOC (for flat finishes) or 380 g/L of VOC (for glossy finishes). In other words, low-VOC paints have significantly reduced amounts of VOC compared to traditional paints with high amounts of it. As a result, low-VOC paints do not emit as many toxic odors as the high-VOC paints do.

For others though, low-VOC paints still have some of the harmful chemicals. That’s why certain locations like hospitals, clinics, child care centers, and nursing homes prefer to go for paints with no VOC. Although “no VOC” paints will have only minuscule amounts of chemicals, they’re otherwise a great option for these types of establishments and facilities.

Eco-friendly paints or “green” paints are rising in popularity not just among residential owners but also commercial owners as well. They’re non-toxic and emit no VOC’s at all. There are many green paints that are plant-, chalk- and even milk-based.

A growing number of companies and facilities are going for low-VOC and non-VOC paints and it is not hard to see why. Using such paints has great advantages to businesses, such as:

  • No noxious odors to bother employees and clients
  • Less negative impact on the environment
  • Low-VOC and non-VOC paints are less likely to cause serious health hazards
  • The quality, durability, and cost of low-VOC and non-VOC paints are about the same as the traditional paints with high VOC
  • Lots of colors and finishes to choose from

Most commercial painters in Hayward have extensive knowledge and experience in such paints and their application. If you want to create a safer business environment for your employees and clients, just specify to your contractor that you want to use low-VOC (or non-VOC) paints.
