Painting Textured Walls When House Painting in Pleasant Hill

Painting Textured Walls When House Painting in Pleasant Hill

A textured wall is trickier to deal with when you’re doing house painting in Pleasant Hill. Compared to a smooth surface, you will want to pay special attention to a textured surface when painting it. This is needed whether you’re painting over walls with a plastered texture, stucco walls or brick walls.

When you are painting textured walls, ordinary paintbrushes and rollers just won’t do. You need the right equipment for this job, as well as a slightly different painting technique.

If you have to paint textured walls, you also have to consider the type of paint products you should use. Semi-gloss alkyd paint is preferable over latex (water-based), flat paint for covering textured surfaces. Because textured surfaces attract more dirt, painting with a semi-gloss finish makes the walls easier to clean than flat paints. Besides, semi-gloss paint won’t be easily susceptible to absorption by the textured walls (unlike latex paints).

There are three common methods of painting on textured walls: by paintbrush, by roller, and by airless sprayer.

Painting with a paintbrush

If you have to paint textured surfaces with a paintbrush, choose a wide-sized brush. Since you are using an alkyd paint, which is an oil-based paint, choose a brush that also has soft bristles (soft bristles are usually made of natural materials such as the hairs of some animals like camel). Brushes with soft bristles are ideal for oil-based paints.

Start painting the textured walls by first painting diagonally in one direction, then the other. This is to make sure that the paint covers every part of the surface. Painting diagonally on a textured wall will also help hide the brush strokes.

Painting with a paint roller

Using a roller depends on the level of texture a surface has. If your surface has a fair amount of texture (such as plaster or other lightly textured surfaces), a roller with a 1/2-inch nap is ideal. It provides a consistent finish on a textured surface. If your surface has an even rougher texture, use a nap measuring 3/4-inch or even longer.

To paint a textured surface, start with overlapping vertical strokes. If this method isn’t enough to get into the texture, roll the paint with a “V”-shaped pattern, and then follow it with vertical strokes.

The roller holds much more paint than the brush does, even as you roll it on the surface. Plus, since you’re painting on a rough surface, there is the likelihood that splashes will occur especially if you roll it fast. Instead, roll the paint more slowly to prevent splattering.

Once you’ve covered the entire surface, check for areas that have excess paint. If these areas have too much paint, remove the excess by using a new roller.

Painting with an airless sprayer

Begin this method by spraying the surface with horizontal patterns measuring about 1.2 meters (4 feet). Overlay it with another spray, but with about 50% of the paint from the first application.

Do the spraying in a slower and deliberate manner. If you go too fast, you won’t cover every area on the surface. If you spray too slowly, it can cause paint drips.

As implied before, textured surfaces need special attention when painting. Whether you choose to use a paintbrush, paint rollers or airless sprayers, you should be extra careful when painting a textured surface in order to achieve an even finish. If you don’t apply the paint well, it will end up a gloppy mess which will have to be corrected. This would require unnecessary time and cost.
